About Our Addiction Treatment Programs for Adults
Many adults go through a phase of consuming alcohol and drugs as they grow up. However, this experimentation can often lead to substance dependence and addiction for many individuals. In recent years, there has been an increase in binge drinking and illicit drug use among adults 18 and older. Additionally, the misuse of prescription drugs has steadily risen among this age group, particularly due to the opioid epidemic in the United States.
At the Discovery Institute of New Jersey, our approach to treatment is comprehensive, focusing on addressing all aspects of our client’s well-being. To provide the best care possible, we offer specialized treatment options and group processing opportunities designed for adults aged 18 and above.
Our adult rehab facility in New Jersey provides a safe and supportive environment along with offering various treatment programs to help adults struggling with co-occurring disorders (substance abuse and mental illness). These programs include residential treatment, outpatient treatment, dual diagnosis treatment, holistic treatment, and relapse prevention services. We also provide addiction therapy services such as individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, and other support groups.
The Prevalence of Substance Abuse in Adults
Many people start experimenting with drugs and alcohol long before reaching adulthood, which can lead to addiction by the time they become adults. However, adult drug rehab offers hope. Specialized addiction treatment programs for adults can be more effective than general treatment methods.
These programs focus on the unique needs of adults, recognizing that they differ significantly from the needs of younger individuals struggling with addiction. We are confident that those seeking our assistance can overcome addiction. Each individual has the potential for recovery, and we are dedicated to helping them find that potential. Our team is committed to providing the necessary support and guidance to achieve a sober and successful future.
The Importance of Age-Geared Treatment Services
The impact of addiction on adults varies across different age groups due to the distinct effects within each demographic. This holds whether we consider the broader perspective or the narrower one. For example, the consequences of substance use differ between adults and senior individuals. Furthermore, age plays a role in determining the factors that contribute to the development of substance addiction.
Young adults, for instance, may be more susceptible to peer pressure and inclined to engage in alcohol and drug use compared to older adults. Moreover, adolescents who are still in the process of physical and cognitive growth may experience the effects of drug abuse differently from older adults.
Substance abuse can either trigger the onset of mental illnesses or worsen existing conditions. Conversely, untreated mental health issues can lead individuals to turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope with and manage their symptoms. Given these reasons, it is crucial for there to be treatment facilities that specifically cater to different age groups, such as an adult rehab center. Therefore, it is imperative for adult men and women who are struggling with substance use disorders (SUDs) to seek help at the earliest opportunity.
The Addiction Treatment Process
The journey towards overcoming addiction is filled with obstacles and challenges. For individuals in recovery, it can be difficult to address the underlying issues that contribute to their addiction without assistance. Some may even recognize the difficulties they face in preventing relapse. To support adults in their recovery, a treatment facility must equip them with the necessary tools and resources to break free from addiction and maintain their newfound freedom. An effective adult rehab center should focus on teaching techniques for preventing relapse, helping individuals manage their cravings, and resisting the urge to use both during and after treatment. Additionally, individuals in recovery who are looking to move forward in life should be able to gain confidence from the support provided by a treatment facility.
At Discovery Institute’s adult rehab center in Marlboro, NJ, we understand the importance of tailoring our care to meet each patient’s needs. Through our various levels of care, such as residential treatment and outpatient rehab programs, our patients in recovery can begin to acquire the skills and resources they need to create a better and healthier way of life for themselves. By offering a continuum of care and employing effective treatment approaches for addiction and mental health disorders, we have achieved positive and successful recovery outcomes for our patients.
For adults seeking recovery from addiction, the lack of support from friends and family members can create obstacles in their journey toward sobriety. This unsupportive attitude may result in peer pressure, which could hinder their progress in addiction treatment.
Consequently, these individuals may find it difficult to stay motivated and committed to their decision to seek help. Residential rehab is the best choice for adolescents receiving treatment for co-occurring disorders when they lack support in their environment and are surrounded by harmful influences. During an inpatient program, each patient resides in a rehab facility around the clock while undergoing treatment.
After completing their inpatient therapy, individuals in recovery have the option to transition into an outpatient rehab program specifically designed for adults. This allows them to continue receiving care, albeit in a less intensive manner. The outpatient drug rehab program for young people requires a specific number of hours per week, as determined by the experts at the rehab center. During this time, individuals can participate in specialized therapy sessions and support groups, all while receiving the necessary care for their addiction recovery.
Furthermore, adults attending outpatient rehab have the choice to either live in their own homes or sober living facilities. However, it is important to note that they shouldn’t opt for outpatient treatment if they are in an environment that does not support their rehabilitation. Outpatient treatment offers various options, including regular outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization programs (PHP), and intensive outpatient programs (IOPs). Both PHP and IOPs allow patients to receive therapy while residing outside of the rehab centers.
Co-occurring disorders in adults are commonly known as dual diagnoses among medical professionals. Managing a dual diagnosis can present significant challenges in life. However, with the assistance of a specialist, an adult can successfully overcome addiction alongside a co-occurring disorder. Individuals facing co-occurring disorders must seek out treatment that addresses both substance use and mental health issues. Focusing solely on one aspect during rehab for adults may overlook important underlying factors that could be exacerbating the individual’s condition. Neglecting to treat all symptoms can often lead to a resurgence in the individual’s cravings. The following are a few of the typical mental health conditions that co-occur with addiction:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar Disorder
- Disorder of compulsive behavior (OCD)
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
The process of rehabilitating adults often involves the utilization of addiction therapy services. This is due to the numerous benefits therapy sessions offer individuals in recovery. Addiction therapies encompass a range of approaches, all of which can be classified as either group or individual counseling. Treatment programs for adults include types of therapies, including:
- Individual therapy
- Group counseling
- Trauma therapy
- Family therapy
- Contingency planning (CM)
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
- Social skills development
Counseling has the potential to foster a sense of support within the community of individuals recovering from addiction. Adults who are striving to break free from the cycle can assist each other in overcoming feelings of solitude and seclusion. It is important to remember that you are not alone in this journey!

Recognizing the Signs of Substance Abuse in Adults
It is crucial to acknowledge and pinpoint red flags that could suggest an adult is facing challenges with alcohol or drug abuse and might require rehabilitation. Those close to them should be vigilant for:
- Extreme secrecy
- Isolation and social withdrawal
- Intense, frequent mood swings
- Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
- Presence of drug paraphernalia or drugs
- Distancing themselves from family and friends
- Moodiness (irritability, anger, depression, anxiety)
- Poor performance in school (poor grades, disrespect, etc.
- Loss of relationships with friends or changes in social groups
- Financial problems, frequently needing to borrow money
- Loss of a job or abandonment of an extracurricular activity
- Symptoms of drug withdrawal, such as nausea, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, shakes or tremors, and restlessness
If you notice any of these indicators in a family member’s life, they might be grappling with alcohol or drug addiction. The adult in question may have developed a dependency on substances and may require assistance in breaking free from it. Intervening in their addiction could potentially encourage them to seek the necessary help. To conquer addiction, it’s recommended that people seek assistance from a reputable addiction treatment facility. Enrolling in a suitable program at an adult rehab center is the initial move towards effectively tackling their substance dependence and guiding them toward a life of sobriety and wellness.

Different segments of the population have specific needs based on their stage in life, and we work to tailor our program to address these needs. Our program is separated based on age so that clients can recover together among their peer group in a supportive, understanding atmosphere where they can relate to other clients.
Our rehab facility is geared towards adults over the age of 18, who may be dealing with different life circumstances and issues than young adults or adolescents do. At the Discovery Institute, we understand the importance of addressing every facet of our client’s lives to provide effective treatment and a foundation for long-term sobriety once our clients graduate from treatment.
The unique needs of adult individuals in rehab programs vary, and our programs are specifically designed to address them. Some of the various needs adults struggling with substance abuse may face include:

Our emphasis is on instructing skills such as time management and stress management to enable our clients to secure and sustain prosperous careers post-treatment.
Based on the findings of the Journal of American Medical Association, it has been revealed that 37% of individuals struggling with alcoholism and 53% of those dealing with drug addiction also experience a co-occurring mental illness. These patients with dual diagnoses often encounter symptoms beyond their addiction, and if not treated appropriately, they face a higher risk of relapse after completing their treatment. At Discovery, our team consists of skilled doctors and therapists who specialize in the treatment of co-occurring mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. We collaborate closely with our clients to develop tailored treatment plans that address both their addiction and their dual diagnosis.
