About Addiction and Recovery
As we mentioned earlier, addiction is a disease. It’s a disorder that affects people from all walks of life, of varying ages, and in most areas of the world. Sadly, many of the people who suffer from addiction do not receive the help that they need in order to end substance dependence in their lives. There are several reasons for this.
In some cases, the unfortunate truth is that individuals who are suffering from substance dependence simply may not want to get help. But, this is certainly not true for everyone who is living with a substance use disorder. Many individuals who suffer from alcoholism or drug dependence truly want help.
But, sometimes, shame and guilt prevent people from reaching out for assistance. The fear of change can also keep people from asking for help. Finally, some people who struggle with addiction are simply not sure where or how to get help. This can lead individuals to avoid getting treatment altogether. Ultimately, this may cause the individual’s addiction to become even more severe and life-threatening.
Thankfully, however, there are many resources available to help those who are dealing with the effects of substance dependence. So, if you are suffering from this disorder, you can find the hope they need for recovery by reaching out to the treatment facilities near you. Through the services available throughout New Jersey, you can gain the skills needed for recovery.
It’s important to note that, as addictions do not develop overnight, recovery is also an ongoing process. It takes time to truly overcome alcohol misuse or drug dependence. This is why professional guidance is often a necessity in cases of addiction and recovery.
Here’s What to Look For When Seeking Treatment
If you are ready to seek help for substance dependence, it’s important to know what to look for in a treatment facility. Often, those who are looking to get help for addiction do not know where to start. This can be both overwhelming and discouraging. But, we are here to help you as you seek treatment!
One of the most important things for you to do as you begin searching for the right rehab center is to evaluate your needs. Addiction affects people differently. Some may find that substance dependence has led to many behavioral and emotional changes. Others may notice drastic changes in their relationships or finances. In nearly every single case of addiction, substance use changes the cognitive functions of those who heavily depend on drugs and alcohol. But, since each person is different and leads a different life than others, it’s important that their treatment process addresses these differences.
In simpler terms, everyone is unique. So treatment should take this into account and provide an individualized approach to recovery. This is where various types of treatment programs and therapeutic approaches come into play.
An Overview of Addiction Treatment: Inpatient Treatment and Outpatient Treatment
There are two main types of addiction treatment programs. These include inpatient and outpatient treatment. Inpatient programs, also known as residential programs, involve various therapies and treatment components that can help individuals to overcome addiction. Also, in a residential program, individuals live at their treatment facility while enrolled in the program. This allows individuals to get the help they need without influences or distractions from the world around them. This type of program is often advised for those who have very severe cases of addiction or those who do not have much support at home.
While enrolled in an outpatient addiction treatment program, individuals do not have to live at their treatment center. Instead, they can live at home or in a sober living environment. They do, however, continue to attend therapy sessions throughout the week.
There are also other types of programs, including intensive outpatient programs (IOPs). An IOP is a higher level of outpatient care. Generally, individuals in an intensive outpatient program receive about 9 hours of clinical treatment per week, attending treatment 3 to 5 days per week.

About Therapy for Addiction Treatment
Detox is usually the first step of treatment for addiction. Although it is a very vital component of treatment, it is not all that is necessary. Detoxification helps to cleanse the body of toxins. It also helps individuals to safely and more comfortably work through the withdrawal process. In essence, detox helps to end a person’s physical use and dependence on drugs and alcohol.
However, in order to overcome addiction, individuals must also overcome the emotional and mental dependence they have on these substances. Therapy can help with this.
Those who are in treatment for substance dependence can benefit greatly from therapy. There are many different types of therapy, each offering very specific advantages.
Individual Therapy
Often, those in recovery will attend individual therapy sessions, which consist solely of the individual and his or her therapist. This one-on-one meeting allows people to have a safe space to discuss their feelings, challenges, past experiences, and anything else that is necessary.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Also known as CBT, this type of therapy helps individuals to identify harmful or negative cognitive behaviors (thoughts). Then, CBT helps people to develop healthier ways to think and cope with emotional challenges.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy: This type of therapy, sometimes called DBT, is similar to cognitive behavioral therapy. While in DBT therapy, people can develop the coping skills they need in order to avoid harmful or habit-forming behaviors. These negative behaviors may be directly or indirectly related to substance use in their lives. Dialectical behavior therapy works to end those behaviors and replace them with healthy ones.
Talk Therapy: It can be difficult for people in recovery to find someone to talk to about their challenges. Talk therapy allows individuals to meet with a therapist and discuss things that may be too personal or difficult to talk about in public settings.
Trauma Processing: In many cases, past traumatic events can contribute to the development of a substance use disorder. For example, a person may turn to alcohol use in order to cope with flashbacks of a traumatic occurrence. It’s important to address trauma in treatment and this is what trauma processing aims to do.
Group Therapy
While individual therapy is absolutely vital, group therapy is also an important component of treatment. Individuals who are struggling with substance dependence and working through recovery often feel extremely alone. They may feel as though no one understands what they’re experiencing.
Group therapy helps people to know that they are not alone at all. It gives people an opportunity to connect with others who are on the same journey to recovery. Group therapy sessions enable people to encourage each other on the road to recovery, learning more about each other and, ultimately, themselves.
Family Therapy
One other form of therapy that can prove to be helpful is family therapy. Far too often, the family members of those who suffer from substance dependence are overlooked. But, the truth of the matter is that addiction does not only affect the people who suffer from it. It also impacts those who love the struggling individual.
In many cases, people who are married to individuals who have substance use disorders find themselves feeling overwhelmed. It can be very difficult to understand what a person is going through when addiction is affecting them. Spouses often struggle to differentiate the effects of substance dependence from the true identity of the person they married. Watching someone you love become someone you no longer recognize is one of the most difficult things a person can experience. The parents, siblings, or children of those who are dealing with addiction also know how this feels.
Even once the individual begins to get treatment for addiction, the effects that substance dependence had on the family still remain. So, it is certainly important for family members to seek support and guidance as their recovering loved ones do the same. Family counseling offers this support.
